The P. LEAGUE+ (pronounced “Plus League”, shortened to “PLG”) is the first league in Taiwan to promote home cities and home teams in order to foster basketball markets, making consumers and fans crucial elements of the industry. Each team will combine basketball with the local culture in their territory. The League, along with the teams and players, will further the Taiwan sports industry, ultimately expand the opportunities and develop the talent of basketball and sports management.
In 2020 as the outbreak of COVID-19 became a reality for the globe, the Taipei Fubon Braves and Formosa Dreamers, members of a regional league that was forced to postpone indefinitely, had no stage to perform. The PLG was formed to rejuvenate basketball in Taiwan. Longtime basketball mainstay Pauian agreed to form a new team called the Taoyuan Pilots, and the Bros Sports Marketing group founded the Hsinchu Lioneers.
2020-2021
The first season consisted of 48 regular season games and two rounds of playoffs. Under the slogan #是時候了 the first season yielded positive results: overall stadium attendance was 82% of capacity, every game was live streamed on YouTube and was viewed almost 250,000 times each. The media coverage created an estimated 500 million NTD value. Each team graciously participated in the retirement tour of legendary player Garret 田壘.
2021-2022
The New Taipei Kings and Kaohsiung Steelers joined as new teams. The first PLG amateur draft took place on July 22nd. The regular season schedule was expanded to 90 games, and included Friday nights. With the multitude of new technology, as well as the explosion of Taiwan basketball discussions taking place, the slogan for the season was #有點意思. Total attendance was 472,648 and total YouTube viewership reached 38 million, culminating in FINALS broadcast with more than 1 million viewers within 24 hours.
2022-2023
With the pandemic put behind, the personality of the players and fans was on full display by the slogan #OhMyPLG. The Regular Season was extended again to 120 games. A number of blockbuster trades saw Joseph Lin as a King and the Pilots selecting three of the first four selections in the PLG amateur draft. The Kings, Braves and Pilots would clinch the first three playoff spots. On February 12th Jeremy Lin joined the Kaohsiung 17LIVE Steelers and the team made a run, only to be denied by the Formosa Dreamers on the final day of the Season. In the Finals, the Kings pushed the series to six games before falling to the three-peat Champion Taipei Fubon Braves. Stadium attendance reached almost 600,000, and YouTube viewership surpassed 50 million.
2023-2024
During the offseason, the PLG named Costco Wholesale Inc. Senior Vice President of Asia Richard Chang 張嗣漢 as the Chairman. This season’s slogan is #PLG唯有籃球 as we embark on another year.
